December 4th, 2009 is the date, 4pm is the time – The Poetry Slam is once again going down @ DMHS in the TV Studio.  If you made it out to the first slam, you know the deal, if you missed it – I’m sure you heard it was dope.  Don’t worry though, you have a chance to witness the power of the word, once again.  This time we are welcoming 5 time National Poetry Slam poet Monique Martin to DMHS.

If you are interested in competing, come see Mr. Garza or Mr. Cisneros in room H4-112. One Hundred dollars is on the line for the poet that brings the heat.                      **  Get to writing, practice and come claim the cash **

iTunes U (iTunes Link), part of the iTunes Store, is an amazing venue for top-notch educational content from the world’s greatest universities, institutions, museums and other public educational foundations. From language lessons to audiobooks to lectures and more, iTunes U is a great place for those who love to learn. With the release of iTunes 9, Apple has put an even bigger spotlight on this great content by featuring it prominently inside the application.

Take some time to explore iTunes U then come back here to list a University or College that has posted a topic or lecture that you are interested in.  What is the topic or lecture about?  How do you think iTunes U will change the way people learn?  Do you think you can use this free service to learn?

You have $10,000 to spend on audio gear.  Go to any of the following website(s) and post a comment about what you would buy.

Every First Friday of the month is our Poetry Slam here @ DMHS.  A DJ is needed before and after the slam to play music and during the slam to record the poets.

If you are interested in learning how to do this, stay after school every Tuesday and Thursday to practice and learn.  See Mr. Cisneros in room H4-116 if you are interested.

Maya Angelou was the first woman to read at a presidential inauguration.  At the inauguration of President Bill Clinton in 1993, she read from her poem “On the Pulse of Morning.”  Below is an excerpt from the poem:

     “History, despite its wrenching
Cannot be unlived, and if faced
          with courage,
     Need not be lived again.
     Lift up your eyes upon
     The day breaking for you.
     Give birth again
     To the dream.
     Women, children, men …
     Lift up your hearts.
Each new hour holds new chances.”

What do you think this excerpt means?  Do you consider the poem a suitable choice for an innauguration?  Why or why not?

  • Producing Natural-Sounding MIDI Notes
When making electronically-produced music, you’ll find yourself often programming notes rather than playing them. People who don’t understand the medium will say that this makes the music cold, mechanical and lifeless, but they simply don’t understand the amount of work and craftsmanship that goes into manually arranging notes. A composer needs to take into […]
  • Weekly Music Writing – Like lifting weights made of creativity
A while back I wrote about writing music constantly in order to build your skills and flex your creativity. This was a great exercise, […]
